Sarah’s bridal shoot took place at her fiance’s parent’s beautiful historic home right off of the square in Columbia, Tn. Lighting can be a challenge in large historic homes as there is no easy way to light spaces that involve so many mirrors and cavernous spaces, but we found some great spots to really manipulate the natural and found light. All of the images use “found” light; just the windows and lamps normally used. I love getting the most out of the lighting a location has to offer. Some people would be looking for the prettiest piece of furniture or dramatic location, but the magic is in the light, the soft or hard qualities, how it bounces around the subject and the emotion created from the angles and color of the light.

I really love these photos (including their engagement and wedding photos), and we had a great time making them.

Had a wonderful afternoon getting ready for Sarah Hays’ wedding by shooting her bridal photos. We also shot her engagement photos as well a few months back. Sarah has a “Mrs. Draper” look and personality which went well with the vintage look.

For the outside shots we needed to come in every 15 minutes or so to keep her nose from becoming red. It was a snowy day so the warm fur coat worked well.

We shot at their family friends historic home on Main Street in Franklin, TN. They also let us use their vintage British roadsters although I didn’t sit in them, I couldn’t fit; it was smaller than a Miata, but very cool.

Whitney had a connection with a private farm in Brentwood, TN for her bridal portraits. I had not seen the farm or the barn before we got there so it took a few times walking around it to get a vision for how to work with the harsh sun. As with most of our bridal portrait sessions we shot for about 2 hours.

At first the idea of shooting a barn seemed cliche, but once we got there, I saw how nicely the green exterior would shoot against the blue sky and golden sunset. I think they turned out well and made for some uniquely memorable shoot.
